What we believe
Democratic socialists believe that both the economy and society should be run democratically—to meet public needs, not to make profits for a few. To achieve a more just society, many structures of our government and economy must be radically transformed through greater economic and social democracy so that ordinary Americans can participate in the many decisions that affect our lives.
What we do
We are a political and activist organization, not a party; through campus and community-based chapters, DSA members use a variety of tactics, from legislative to direct action, to fight for reforms that empower working people.
How we organize
Our Chapter has six levels of organization.
Chapter - We organize across the entire Research Triangle area.
Branch - We have three geographically based branches, as of now: Chapelboro (Chapel Hill and Carrboro), Durham, and Raleigh.
Committees - A Committee is a group within the Local Chapter that is tasked with carrying out an internal function for the chapter. We have three established committees dedicated to communications, membership, and health and safety.
Working Group - A Working Group is a selection of members devoted through to specific issues like electoral work, tenant organizing, political education, etc.
Sections - A Section is a group of members that associate due to a shared identity. Our Chapter currently has sections dedicated to afrosocialists, caregivers, youth, and disabled individuals.
Associations - An Association is a group of members that associate due to a shared interest. We currently have associations dedicated to bowling, hiking, tabletop gaming, crafting, self-defense, and video games.
At each level, decisions are made democratically.
