Our chapter works on various campaigns. We only highlight a few recent projects here.
Covid-19 Response (Chapter-Wide)
In the past several weeks, millions of workers have been sent home without pay. For the most precarious, that means evictions, utility shut-offs, payments, and other economic catastrophes. That's why NC Triangle DSA has partnered with Mutual Aid Carrboro to create the COVID-19 Mutual Aid Relief Fund. Money given to this fund will be used to support workers facing serious disruption because they've been kept home without pay.
So far, we have raised over $70,000, all of which will go directly to local workers in the form of $150 grants to cover urgent needs — however, need has far outpaced fundraising so far, so we are continuing to raise as much as we can so as to help as many workers as possible. If you can, please consider donating to the fund.
Tenant organizing (Durham, Chapel hill, Carrboro)
Across the country regular people are joining together to demand a fair solution to this housing crisis. These groups are called tenants councils or tenants unions; they allow groups of neighbors to present unified demands to landlords and local governments. Working together in a tenants council amplifies the voices of renters and achieves better results than fighting alone.
Our chapter is providing support to people who want to start tenants councils in the Triangle. We provide materials, training, and advice to help you start a council. We can also help you research your landlord and plan a strategy to fight against unfair renting practices. If you’re interested in working with us, fill out this form and we’ll reach out to you as soon as possible. If you want to learn more, visit this page on tenant organizing.
Electoral Organizing (Chapel hill, Carrboro)
Many residents of the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area hold generally progressive views, but there is an organization gap in this space that has been a barrier to mass mobilization of these voters. To remedy this gap, we are developing Solid Orange, a communications effort intended to demystify the workings of Orange County politics, support progressive candidates for local offices, and connect volunteers directly with those candidates’ campaigns. Solid Orange will utilize written and video content to analyze local political bodies and issues with a socialist lens.
We are looking for more volunteers to help build Solid Orange. Volunteers can join our current team to help us attend local board and council meetings, perform research, write content, produce videos, and boost Solid Orange on social media, among other tasks.
Political Education (Chapter-Wide)
Political education is one of the most vital tasks of a socialist organization — we all have a good intuition for the things that are wrong, but good organizing cannot come from intuition alone. The political education working group conducts trainings and lectures to help our members discover and learn from the rich history of struggle against capitalism. Past topics have included carceral capitalism, socialist feminism, and workplace organizing. If you’re new to the DSA and not sure how best to help out, attend one of our events.
